Lyman finds work at stations around Mount Isa, but hit the road on the APRA circuit a year ago. "Last Christmas I travelled down to South Australia and Victoria for six months. I went with a friend who was doing the same rodeo circuit and he knew a few people down there, like stock contractors who own bulls. We saved money, two or three thousand dollars, and we stayed with the stock contractors. We helped them out, feeding their bulls and working for them and going to rodeos with them. We spent a few weeks here and a few weeks there. A friend bought a car for $3000 in Adelaide.
"You get to ride some of the same bulls at the stock contractors and you get to know some of them. If you do rodeos during the week, sometimes you can get on the same bull in two weeks time. Every contract rodeo stock has a number on it, so next week if you see the same bull and you draw up on him, you can guess what he's going to do.
"Earthquake's a pretty big bull but I haven't been on him yet. Makes you a bit frightened looking at him. You get these tough bulls and it makes you want to give up riding bulls and ride horses. At least horses don't chase you when you get off them.
"I ride bareback horses too - they're much better than bulls. I've only been riding horses for three years and have got a lot of enjoyment out of it. It's good to do two events because you've got more chance of winning money that way. I'll probably keep doing bulls and bareback for a while. When I go back down to South Australia for the Pro shows I'll see what happens and see what I like best. I'll probably end up with horses.
"If I never had to work I'd just do rodeos, but you've got to have the money too, eh? I look forward to going to rodeos - you see all your mates that you haven't seen for a while and you're happy to see them. And there's atmosphere."
