Jason was born in Townsville in 1960 and has now lived and worked in Mount Isa for 18 years , with only a short time in the Navy, and returning to Mount Isa in 2000.
 
He attended schools in Ayr, Atherton and All Souls college Charters Towers. After coming to Mount Isa in 1982 he started martial arts at the Sikaran Club, becoming an instructor in 1988.
 
In 1998, he represented Australia at the 5th WEKAF (World Escrima Kali Arnis Federation) Championships in the Phillipines, placing 3rd.

  • Selected to represent Australia in Martial Arts (full contact stick fighting: Arnis) placing 3rd at the world championships in Cebu city, Phillipines after going down by 1 point to the eventual world champion (from the USA).
  • Defeating national Filipino champ
  • Representing the Royal Australian Navy in Dragon boat racing (world champions)
  • Receiving the 1999 Mount Isa Senior Sportsperson of the Year award and representing the city for the North Queensland awards
  • Black Belt gradings in Sikaran (3rd Degree), Arnis (in the Phillipines) and Doce Pares Escrima (Melbourne and the Phillipines)
