Subsequent to being born in Canada, Elli, and her family came to Mount Isa where she attended the Healy Pre-School and Primary School. She started her swimming career in Mount Isa at an early age and displayed exceptional potential. So much so, that in 1983, at the age of 9, Elli and her family moved to Sydney to further her career. She then moved to Brisbane to swim under Scott Volkers before going back to Sydney and eventually taking up a scholarship at the University of California.

PROFILE
- Long serving Australian team member who first repped at the '91 World Champs in Perth. Australian IM Swimmer of the Year, 1994-1995
- Convinced herself she would never swim for Australia again after the '98 World Champs in Perth.
- In 1999, at age 25, she again wore the Australian cap at the Pan Pacs in Sydney, her hometown, and finished with the bronze medal in a PB of 2:14.51.
- Elli has dominated medley swimming in Australia and has rarely been out of an international final.
