The following is a Letter to the Editor in the North West Star published February 6, 2001 and reproduced here with the express permission of the writer, Sam Coward.
"My fiancee and I moved to Mount Isa about a month ago (early January 2001) from the Sunshine Coast on a work transfer and, like many myths, this town was painted in an awful light. I have delighted in telling friends and relatives that these horror stories are far from the facts.
"I didn't think it possible for one community to be so friendly, the warmth and total selflessness demonstrated to us by the locals has been overwhelming. It has not taken long for us to adjust or feel at home even in light of personal tragedy and this I believe is largely due to the people of Mount Isa.
"I particularly would like to thank Paul Malouf and indeed the Malouf family, of Malouf Honda and Daewoo, for their genuine care and time they have devoted to making us feel at home, thank you.
"As I read the daily paper, it amazes me that it appears the town is shrinking and families are moving to the coast. Let me just say as a coast local for most of my life, you might search every stretch of coast in search of a community and town spirit like this one but I guarantee you'll never find it.
"We are home and thanks for having us Mount Isa."
