PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

What do I need to work in the Mines in Mount Isa?

Before being considered for a position through Xstrata Mount Isa Mines, or contractors to the mine, it is essential you obtain the following;

• A Pre Employment Medical
  Medicals include a chest x- rays, hearing test, physical fitness examination and various drug and alcohol testing according to Australian Standards. Depending on the area of the mine you are working, various other examinations may be required, for example, blood lead testing.
  
  (Xstrata pre-employment medicals are can range from $200.00 through to $400.00 depending on the requirements and medical center).
   
• A Safety Induction
  These are called the Metalliferous Mining Surface and Underground Inductions (once again depending on which area you are working, you may only need surface).
  Krause Health and Safety run these courses on a weekly basis in both Mount Isa and Townsville.
  
  (Cost from 01/07/06 at Krause Health & Safety is $310.00 for surface and $170.00 for underground. If these above course are booked and sat together the fee is $410.00).
   
• Personal Protective Clothing (PPE) and Safety Equipment
  For example, hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, steel cap lace-up boots, orange reflective clothing. (This can all be purchased through BOC).
