MOUNT ISA AT COUNTRY WEEK EXPO

Approximately 6,000 people visited the Country Week Expo held at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre at the weekend. The Expo was made up of some 70 booths representing approximately 50 different regions and/or organisations. Some of these regions included Roma - Injune - Surat, Warrego, Gladstone, Torres Shire, Warwick, Townsville, Toowoomba and Mount Isa.

The Mount Isa display, an initiative of the Mount Isa City Council, Mount Isa Chamber of Commerce and Xstrata Mount Isa Mines decided to participate in the Expo after funds were secured by Member for Mount Isa, Mrs Betty Kiernan.

Delegates from each of the organisations answered enquiries ranging from weather conditions, job vacancies, housing availability and rates of pay. Delegates included:
Mrs Betty Kiernan, Member for Mount Isa; His Worship the Mayor Cr. Ron McCullough; Mr Michael Dougall, CEO Mount Isa City Council; Mr Glen Graham, City Development Officer Mount Isa City Council; Mrs Michelle Pearce, Executive Assistant to the Chief Operating Officer Xstrata Copper North Queensland; Ms Lynette Napier, Human Resources Officer Xstrata Mount Isa Zinc Lead Operations and Ms Cassandra Bird, Manager Mount Isa Chamber of Commerce.

Mount Isa Chamber of Commerce Manager Cassandra Bird believes the Expo was worthwhile attending and was happy with the general response from visitors. "It was good to see so many people interested in Mount Isa and what's happening in the region. We met a number of highly skilled people who could potentially help fill many of our existing job vacancies. These included highly sought after tradespeople such as Electricians; Fitters; Engineers; Childcare Workers; and Chefs." said Ms Bird.

"We also met a number of former residents who recalled past events and reflected on their time spent in the City."

Of the 6,000 visitors through the doors, it is believed a large proportion of those attending visited the Mount Isa display and talked to its delegates. Many of whom took information about the City, including maps; tourism guides; brochures; and local publications.

In addition, contact details for numerous local organisations were handed out in an effort to fill vacancies listed with the Chamber of Commerce prior to the event.
A list of the job vacancies along with contact information for each of the organisations is currently being added to the Chamber's websites for further reference.
